A little bit about the history of Cape Coral. The founding idea of Cape Coral was raised in the late 1950s when the brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen bought the entire pristine land beyond the Caloosahatchee River in 1957. They started massivly with excavating canals, building infrastructure and marketing the cultivated land as construction sites. At the beginning of the 60's, the first residential buildings were built.
More about the history
The History of Cape Coral:
Florida was discovered in 1513 by the Spaniard Ponce de Leon. In 1821 Spain gave the land to the United States and in return received $ 5 million in debt. In 1822, Florida became an organized territory and settlers flocked together. There were inevitable clashes between Seminoles and Whites, which resulted in massacres during the Seminole Wars ended. Later, the country was named in Florida and in 1845 became a state. The state sold much of its land to railway companies, which in turn sold the land to various companies and individuals. One of these people was Franklin Miles of Miles Laboratories and Alka Seltzer, who acquired part of the country in 1910. At that time, Cape Coral was known as "the other side of the river" or "Hungryland" and was sparsely populated and a wild place to survive. The Brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen bought the land in 1957 from Franklin Miles, Ogden Phipps and Granville Keller for $ 678,000, known as Redfish Point. The story of Cape Coral was about to change. They started to heavily cultivate the land, the workers slept in tents and had to fight against rattlesnakes, panthers and alligators. Ditches were excavated with dredges and the earth was used to build the land at the required height of 6 feet above sea level. There were so many channels and lakes raised that they didnt had to bring any dirt. Sellers used a fleet of free-flight aircraft over the territory as a very effective sales method. Flour sacks were dropped over the plots customers bought from the air! Rosens built a country club and a golf course. In the first five months, they sold $ 5 million worth of land! In 1959, a plot cost between 990 and 1990 dollars (canal waterfront) and a riverside plot even 3390 dollars. A two bedroom, one bath home cost $ 10,990, and a three bedroom, three bath home cost $ 26,250. The Cape Coral Bridge was built in 1964. In 1963, the population was 2,850 , there were 1,300 buildings completed or under construction; 180 miles of roads were built and canals with a total length of about 180 miles were dug. From then on, the development of Cape Coral progressed rapidly.
